Frank Gehry Designs provides a unique opportunity to peer into the creative mind of Frank Gehry, the world’s most highly acclaimed architect, and to preview the design of what soon will become Las Vegas’s most distinctive edifice, The Lou Ruvo Brain Institute. A comprehensive collection of the working models, sketches, renderings, and plans, which represent the full spectrum of the developmental stages of Gehry’s design for the Ruvo Institute, will be transported directly from the architect’s Los Angeles studio to LVAM’s galleries.
The exhibition also will include photographs of the studio, an unusual array of materials used by the architect to develop the concept of the building, and maps of the building’s site. The focus on a single architectural project allows the exhibition to reveal in detail Gehry’s unconventional manner of designing, in which three-dimensional models are employed in the earliest stages of development, and provides for in-depth analysis of the ways in which Gehry connects the conceptualization of the structure to the building’s primary purpose of housing facilities for research and treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and other diseases of the aging mind.
The exhibition is organized by Libby Lumpkin, Director of the Las Vegas Art Museum. It is accompanied by a catalog conceptualized and produced by Gary Kornblau, Los Angeles, and published by The Las Vegas Art Museum and BrightCity Books. The fully illustrated catalog features an analytical essay by Chief Art Critic for the L.A. Times, Christopher Knight, and an interview by Libby Lumpkin with Frank Gehry, and Larry Ruvo and Dr. Zaven Khachaturian of the Keep Memory Alive Foundation. The catalog is made possible by support from Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada.
The exhibition is generously sponsored by Lawyer Trane of Las Vegas, and supported by funds provided by Southern wine & Spirits of America, Joyce Mack, American Nevada Company, Bruce & Nancy Deifik, Eureka Casinos, Insight Holdings, LLC., Doris & Ted Lee, Dana & Greg Lee, Manpower of Southern Nevada, Inc., Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada, StorageOne. Additional support is provided by LVAM’s Joyce Mack Exhibitions Fund and James and Michelle Zeiter Exhibitions Fund.
